Formed from an ancient volcanic caldera, the crater is surrounded by dramatic highlands and features open grasslands, forests, wetlands and freshwater springs that support wildlife throughout the year.
A game drive on the crater floor offers excellent opportunities to see lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos and large numbers of gazelles. The area is also one of Tanzania’s notable places for spotting the endangered black rhino.
